Chocolate Roses
Covered with gentle kisses
Night has just begun
Venice Renee-Lynn Hughes
She said the war had just begun.
That she had been there
Only once.
Laid in mourning, came undone.
For she had lost
Her only son.
She heard the voices.
And the pain they sung.
As they carried their babies
One by one.
No second chances.
What’s done is done.
She waited for justice.
But there were none.
They blamed the founders.
And their “constitution”.
But she blamed those monsters
Holding the gun.
No second chances.
And what’s done is done.
She doesn’t ask for a resolution
She prays for one.
Venice Hughes
Please, let me shake your hand
And thank you for your service
For your loyalty to our land
Please, let me shake your hand
I am forever grateful you took a stand
To keep our flag above the surface
So please, let me shake your hand
And thank you for your service

The polls have closed,
And the people have spoken,
Placing their ballots
Into the hands of history.
Forming a foundation
Of what has yet to come,
The course has been decided
And he steps up to the podium.
He speaks
“We are Americans”
United under a promise,
To forever reign free
As one nation undivided
To protect our liberties.
No matter the affiliation
We were granted the freedom of choice
Not for one to govern us
But to work for me and you.
“We are Americans”
Who shouted
“Yes we can”
When the world claimed
We couldn’t change,
And together, we did.
Four years has passed
And we are still American’s
United under a promise
To forever reign free.

They ask if I could still remember,
As if I could ever forget.
That day we watched in terror,
That day our nation wept.
Together as one
We watched them fall,
Heard the cries,
Heard them
All
That chilling morning in September
Changed everything we’d ever known.
The air was chard with sadness,
And silence echoed as
The wind blew with grief.
Listening through
Silence, we
Took a
Knee
They ask if I could still remember
As if I could ever forget.
Strangers waiting by the phone,
Praying for some answers,
Feeling so alone.
Together, it
Hurt, because it
Was just to
Close to
Home
“They ask if we could remember, as if we could ever forget”
Venice Renee-Lynn Hughes
Children die
Families mourn
Hearts stained by misery and fear.
I wanted to make a difference.
I tried
And tried
But failed
Politicians lie
Truths ignored
Society’s blind, but the issue’s clear.
You wanted to change the world.
You tried,
And tried
But failed
As one
As many
Not bound by a direction,
Not defined by an affiliation,
We can cast aside the difference
And possibly change the world.
Together as one, Together we can
We’ll pray,
We’ll believe,
We’ll prevail
Venice Renee-Lynn Hughes
You don’t know me
And I never knew you
But we sit here together
And pray side by side,
Sharing in this moment
Our meaning of life
You saved my life
When you fought for me
When you fought in that moment
It was no longer just you
I stood by your side
And we fought together
We knew that together
We could preserve life
With God on our side
You’d protect me
And I’ll watch over you
And we’d be one in that moment
Even if it were just for a moment
That we would share time together
As strangers still, for I never knew you
But I knew of your life
Because you gave it for me
As I stayed by your side
And we cried at your side
But just for a moment
Because you don’t know me
You just know we’re together
And you must fight for my life
As someone once did for you
Each Year I’ll stand and pray with you
With a flag swinging from my side
Representing your fight for a life
Just as you did in that moment
That you sacrificed together
In an effort to pave a way for me
You never knew me, but you saved my life
You kept it together and held hope at your side
Today I take a moment to say thanks and I salute you
Venice Renee-Lynn Hughes
Thank You
